Get comfortable at being uncomfortable
In a world that prioritises comfort and convenience, humans have grown accustomed to seeking familiarity and avoiding discomfort at all costs. However, this tendency towards comfort has inadvertently hindered our evolution and stunted our personal growth. By shying away from discomfort, we limit our potential and miss out on valuable opportunities for learning and development. It is only by challenging ourselves to embrace discomfort that we can truly thrive and unlock our fullest potential as individuals.
This is one of the reason why I have signed up to hike the equivalent height of Mount Everest (8849m) in 48 hours in the Lake District. The event is taking place on 13-15th of September this year. I am excited and apprehensive. Plus, all the emotions in between! It will most certainly be a mental challenge. I will be going into uncharted terrority. This will be the longest and highest I have ever hiked/walked. Even prior to my pelvic surgery in January 2024.
The operation was called an internal hemipelvectomy. It was done to remove a benign bone tumour and replacing it with a custom titanium implant. There was a time when I wasn’t sure that I would be able to walk un aided, let alone attempt a challenge like this. It will push me physically to my limit. On the outer edge of my comfort zone and beyond. This is the space where we learn a lot about ourselves.
Book Recommendation
I listened to an audiobook recently called “The Comfort Crisis” by Michael Easter. It was a great book and I would highly recommend it. It was perfect timing for me to listen to it. It delves into the detrimental effects of excessive comfort on human health, happiness, and resilience. Easter argues that modern society's obsession with comfort and convenience has led to widespread physical and mental health issues, as well as a decline in resilience and adaptability. I agree with this 100%! Easter explores how embracing discomfort and challenges can lead to greater fulfilment, growth, and overall well-being. He encourages readers to step outside their comfort zones, embrace discomfort, and rediscover the inherent strength and resilience that lies within us all. Something that I hope this blog encourages you to do too!
Why we NEED to embrace discomfort
Embracing discomfort is a fundamental aspect of personal growth and resilience. As human beings, our instinctual desire for comfort often impedes our progress and limits our potential. However, when we learn to embrace discomfort, we unlock a wealth of opportunities for self-improvement, evolution, and success.
Firstly, discomfort challenges us to step outside our comfort zones and confront our fears. Whether it's public speaking, trying a new skill, or taking on difficult physical challenges, these experiences force us to confront our limitations and expand our capabilities. By pushing past our comfort barriers, we develop greater confidence and self-assurance, enabling us to tackle even more significant challenges in the future.
Moreover, discomfort fosters adaptability and resilience in the face of adversity. Life is unpredictable, and setbacks are inevitable. When we become comfortable with discomfort, we learn to navigate uncertainty with grace and determination. Instead of being paralysed by fear or anxiety, we develop the resilience to persevere in the face of challenges, ultimately emerging stronger and more resilient than before. This is something that I feel deeply having gone through what I have the past 2 years.
Additionally, embracing discomfort is essential for fostering innovation and creativity. Breakthroughs rarely occur within the confines of familiarity and routine. It is only by venturing into the unknown, experimenting with new ideas, and challenging conventional wisdom that true innovation flourishes. Discomfort pushes us to think outside the box, explore unconventional solutions, and push the boundaries of what is possible.
Furthermore, discomfort promotes personal growth and development. Just as muscles grow stronger through resistance training, our character and capabilities are strengthened through adversity. When we willingly subject ourselves to discomfort, whether through rigorous training, academic challenges, or personal development endeavors, we cultivate resilience, discipline, and perseverance—all of which are essential qualities for success in any endeavor.
Moreover, embracing discomfort fosters empathy and compassion towards others. When we confront our own vulnerabilities and struggles, we gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by others. This heightened empathy enables us to connect more authentically with those around us, offer support and encouragement, and contribute positively to our communities.
In conclusion, getting comfortable with being uncomfortable is essential for our personal growth, resilience, and success as human beings. By embracing discomfort, we expand our horizons, cultivate resilience, foster innovation, and develop empathy—all of which are critical for navigating life's challenges and realising our fullest potential. So, let us embrace discomfort as an opportunity for growth and transformation, knowing that the rewards far outweigh the temporary discomfort we may experience along the way.
With Love and Health
