Overcoming Setbacks: Common Mistakes and How to Navigate Obstacles
Life is unpredictable, and setbacks are inevitable. Whether you’re recovering from a surgery, navigating a personal loss, or dealing with unexpected health challenges, obstacles have a way of testing our resilience. Reflecting on my journey, I’ve learned valuable lessons about overcoming setbacks and avoiding the common pitfalls that can make them harder to endure. Let me share these insights with you, along with actionable tips to help you thrive when faced with challenges.
Mistake 1: Ignoring Your Physical and Mental Needs
It’s easy to focus on external achievements, like hitting recovery milestones or meeting deadlines, while neglecting the basic needs of your body and mind. After my pelvic surgery, I was making steady progress—back in the gym, driving, and feeling hopeful. But when an unexpected lung biopsy and seizure set me back, the physical pain and effect on my mental health were overwhelming.
Why This Happens:
In times of crisis, survival instincts kick in, and we often prioritise "doing" over "being." We might push through pain, neglect rest, or avoid addressing emotional struggles. This short-term focus on productivity can leave us depleted when setbacks arise.
What to Do Instead:
Physical Care: Prioritise movement that feels good for your body, adequate sleep, and nourishing food. These are foundational to building resilience.
Mental Care: Acknowledge your emotions and seek support, whether through journaling, talking to a friend, or working with a therapist. Sometimes, a pause to process your feelings is the most productive step forward.
Spiritual Care: Practices like meditation, gratitude journaling, or connecting with nature can ground you in the present moment and provide a sense of perspective.
Mistake 2: Expecting a Linear Path to Progress
Progress, especially after a setback, is rarely a straight line. For me, losing the ability to drive after a seizure felt like a massive step back. Once again my independence was taken away from me and threw me back into uncertainty. I spiralled mentally, frustrated that I wasn’t moving forward the way I had been.
Why This Happens:
Society often equates progress with steady, upward momentum, but the reality is different. Healing, growth, and success are messy, filled with detours and plateaus. When we hold ourselves to unrealistic timelines or expectations, setbacks can feel catastrophic.
What to Do Instead:
Shift Your Mindset: See progress as a journey rather than a destination. Every step, even the small ones, counts. Celebrate the small improvements, like getting out of bed or completing a simple task.
Practice Patience: Remind yourself that setbacks are temporary. They can be an opportunity to rebuild strength and learn valuable lessons about perseverance.
Focus on What You Can Control: Redirect your energy to areas where you can make progress, even if they’re unrelated to your original goals. For example, while I couldn’t drive, I worked on my upper body strength and mental resilience instead.
Mistake 3: Facing Challenges Alone
When life throws a curveball, there’s a tendency to retreat inward, either out of shame, frustration, or a sense of independence. While solitude can be helpful for reflection, isolating yourself entirely can worsen the emotional effect of setbacks.
Why This Happens:
We might think, “I should be able to handle this,” or fear burdening others with our struggles. But bottling up emotions or avoiding support networks often amplifies feelings of helplessness.
What to Do Instead:
Reach Out: Whether it’s a trusted friend, family member, or online community, sharing your struggles can lighten the emotional load.
Seek Professional Help: Therapists, coaches, or support groups specialising in your situation can provide practical tools and emotional validation.
Build a Routine of Connection: Regularly check in with people who uplift you. Connection doesn’t have to revolve around problem-solving; it can simply be about spending quality time together.
Final Thoughts
Setbacks and obstacles are an inevitable part of life, but how we navigate them shapes our growth and resilience. As I’ve learned from my own experiences, preparation and self-care are key to weathering the storms. Life may throw you challenges, but with the right tools and mindset, you can find strength in adversity and even thrive rather than just survive.
If you’re facing a tough time right now, remember this: challenges are temporary, and each one offers an opportunity for growth.
With love and encouragement
